‘AI Demon’? Christian Writer Says Musk’s Grok Sent Her a Strange Image After An Editing Request

Christian conservative journalist Megan Basham says Elon Musk’s AI tool Grok sent her a demonic image after she asked it to simply edit a few paragraphs about Christian colleges.

“I just asked Grok how it would edit a couple of clunky paragraphs I’d written about Christian colleges for better flow,” Basham wrote on X. “And it replied with this image.”

When she resubmitted the text, Grok repeatedly turned it into a screenshot of a demonic looking creature with red eyes.

The AI eventually apologised, calling it an “erroneous image generation attempt” likely triggered by a “contextual misparse of sensitive topics like spiritual compromise.”

Some Christian commentators online went further, suggesting the strange reply echoed past internet lore about “Loab,” a so-called AI demon said to live within image-generation models.

In 2022, Vice journalist Steph Swanson, known online as Supercomposite, discovered the eerie figure of an older woman after entering the reverse prompt “Brando::-1.” Despite attempts to stop it, the system kept producing disturbing images of the same spectral woman.

Some weighed on Basham’s thread.

Sean Davis, co-founder of the American conservative online magazine The Federalist, wrote: “When AI tells you what it is, believe it.”
