Corbyn Cold-Calling Americans to Help Socialist Run for New York Mayor
Jeremy Corbyn has taken his North London socialism overseas, joining U.S. Democratic Socialists to campaign for Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in the New York City mayoral primary.
On Sunday, Corbyn, now interim leader of his new party Your Party, co-founded with MP Zarah Sultana, announced on X that he was helping “Get Out The Vote” for Mamdani in partnership with New York arm of the Democratic Socialists of America, the country’s largest socialist organization.
U.S. President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a 100 percent “communist.”
Phone banking is the U.S. version of phone-based canvassing, where campaign volunteers call voters one-by-one to push them to the polls.
“Let’s get Zohran over the finish line for a New York that’s affordable for all,” Corbyn wrote. The image carried the disclaimer: Paid for by Zohran for NYC.
On another post on Facebook, Corbyn posted a photo of himself holding a “North London 4 Zohran” T-shirt.
Mamdani, 33, born to wealthy, influential parents of Indian descent in Kampala, Uganda, lives in a rent-controlled apartment, describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” and is pushing policies including: free bus travel, universal childcare, a freeze on rent hikes for 1 million apartment and a pilot scheme for city-run grocery stores.
During the 2020 George Floyd protests, Mamdani labelled the NYPD “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety” and backed defund the police policies though he now claims to have rowed back on the comments.
Corbyn, meanwhile, remains tied to the antisemitism scandal that sank his Labour leadership.
In 2020, the Equality and Human Rights Commission found the party under his control had committed unlawful discrimination against Jewish members. He was later suspended and formally expelled from Labour in 2024 after rejecting the findings.
He now fronts Your Party and continues to deny all allegations.
