Green Party Candidate Wants to Abolish Prisons

A Scottish Green candidate set to enter parliament has openly called for the complete abolition of prisons.

Kate Nevens, expected to become an MSP next month, wants “the complete abolition of the prison system in Scotland” and hopes to live in a country with no prisons at all.

In a video posted on Instagram, Nevens said: “Prisons are not safe, they’re violent, they’re poor for people’s health and wellbeing, particularly if you’re a woman. And they fail to support rehabilitation.

“So actually they do not make those of us who are not breaking the law safer either.”

That directly contradicts party HQ attempts to soften her stance, which claimed prisons would remain a “last resort.”

The idea of scrapping prisons entirely comes straight from left wing radical activist circles, which push to replace the justice system with “community-based” and “restorative” models.

Nevens, a charity worker, is her party’s second pick on the Edinburgh and Lothians East regional list and even has a chance of being elected to Holyrood next month if the Greens perform well.

SNP MP Angus Robertson wrote on X: “Scottish Greens are calling for the abolition of prisons! No seriously, they are. Absolutely bonkers.”

Is Reform proposing anything even half as mad as abolishing prisons?
