Italian-American Group Accuses Mamdani of ‘Erasing’ Little Italy
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been accused of trying to erase Italian-American history after Little Italy was left off a city map of recognised communities.
Oof, Madon’!
The Italian American Civil Rights League said the omission followed an earlier dispute over a permit for its Unity Day event.
“Zohran Mamdani wants to erase Italian Americans,” the group wrote.
“First, he denied our permit for Unity Day 2026. Now, he is excluding Little Italy as a recognised location altogether on the map.”
The organisation added: “Italian Americans built New York City.”
“This is not a clerical error. This is cultural erasure,” said Mike Crispi, President of the Italian American Civil Rights League.
“Little Italy is sacred ground. It is where Italian immigrants came with nothing, worked like hell, opened shops, raised families, built churches, fed the city, and helped make New York what it is.”
The dispute has quickly become another flashpoint in the wider culture war surrounding the New York Mayor.
Mamdani, 33, born to wealthy, influential parents of Indian descent in Kampala, Uganda, lives in a rent-controlled apartment, describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” and is pushing policies including: free bus travel, universal childcare, a freeze on rent hikes for 1 million apartment and a pilot scheme for city-run grocery stores.
Little Italy remains one of the city’s most famous historic neighbourhoods and has long been associated with generations of Italian immigration, family businesses, restaurants and Catholic traditions.
