Green Council Urges Residents to Report England Flags During World Cup

Councils across the West Country are warning football fans not to stick England flags on lampposts, railings or other public property during the World Cup, or they could be taken down.

Bristol’s Green council leader Tony Dyer said supporters were welcome to fly flags from their homes but could not put them on public property.

“What people cannot do is fly flags on lampposts or railings or any public property,” he said. “Please do not attach anything to lampposts—it causes health and safety issues.”

Health and safety?

The council said it would prioritise the removal of flags in “sensitive locations” and would review the strategy for removing flags on council-owned property and is urging residents to report any flags or decorations hung on public property.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “Any flags or items displayed without permission on public land or council property will be removed by the council.”

They added the rules were in place to “protect public safety, prevent damage to public assets, ensure the highway remains safe and usable for everyone, and maintain a welcoming and cohesive community feel.”

The Green Party has portrayed attempts to put up flags as part of a wider campaign of intimidation and exclusion, fuelled by scapegoating, inflammatory rhetoric and a climate that fosters racism and division.

The party also appears to have a problem with the history of the British flag.

In a long statement, Hastings Green Party described the Union Flag as “unusual.”

“Many countries chose flags that mark independence or unity from within. For example, the French Tricolour grew out of revolution and the call for liberty and equality. The Stars and Stripes marked a new nation that broke away from empire,” it said.

A bit of a pass for the French there, considering they cut all those the heads off.

“More recent flags, such as those of India or South Africa, symbolise freedom after long struggles. By contrast, the Union Flag records unions made from above. Some came through pressure. Others came through conquest. Therefore, its bold, layered design also reminds us that the nations were never fully equal.”

Communist killjoys will never stop trying to flying the flag into a lecture on colonial guilt, even during the World Cup!
