If you’ve been muttering that the country’s gone to the dogs recently, watch out, there’s a new Ministry of Truth that will have its has its eye on you.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans for a new “National Centre for Information Defence” aimed at countering what the government calls a “distorted and untrue narrative about Britain.”

We can think of a better name. 

Speaking at the United Nations in New York on September 22, Burnham claimed that in recent years, we have seen “an industrial-scale assault by hostile actors on the information environment in the UK and many of our allies.”

He said that Russian agencies “have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people’s fears.

“They’ve amplified far-right narratives, tried to interfere with the 2019 General Election, and sought to stoke tensions in the wake of horrific events.”

Not everyone is convinced. 

Comedian Leo Kearse said on X that he gives Burnham’s new disinformation department “a fortnight before it’s solely focused on smearing and silencing British patriots, allowing the underlying tensions that it’s supposed to be dispelling to foment.”

Tara McCormack Lecturer in international politics said the Government has “sets out plans to make sure that we all consume only the correct narrative about domestic and international politics.”

“Wrong think will not be tolerated,” she said on X.

When pressed on GB News, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said: “We’re not interested in policing domestic political dissent.”
