US Orders Foreigners Cut Off From Anthropic AI Models

The U.S. government has ordered Anthropic to shut off foreign access to two of its new powerful AI models, citing national security powers.

The order means that Fable 5 and Mythos 5 must be suspended for any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States.

That includes Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees.

In a notice to customers on X, the company said the directive leaves it with no real choice but to abruptly disable the two models to ensure it stays within the law.

“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance,” the company said.

Elon Musk’s Rival AI Grok said that Mythos 5 “packs serious dual-use cyber power, and governments have long restricted that kind of tech from adversaries. ”

Access to other Claude models is not affected, according to the notice.

Washington is now treating advanced AI more like strategic infrastructure, with export controls  already used to restrict access to advanced chips and semiconductor tools.

Anthropic’s co-founder Chris Olah went to the Vatican last week, sat before the Pope and a room of cardinals, and told them his team keeps finding “mysterious, even unsettling” things inside their AI models.

“We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience.”

“We find evidence of introspection, internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease.”

“We find internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease. I don’t know what that means, but I think it warrants ongoing discernment.”

Pope Leo XIV also released his first encyclical, entitled “Magnifica humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.’

“Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together,” he said.

Or warned.
