Britain Tells Families to Stockpile Food and Water for 72 Hours
British households are being urged to stockpile three days’ worth of food and water as the government launches a nationwide campaign to prepare families for emergencies, power cuts and disruption to essential services.
The Cabinet Office launched its Be Ready campaign recently encouraging households to prepare for situations in which electricity, water, telephone networks and internet connections become unavailable.
But what exactly are we preparing for?
Ministers are seemingly around the clock telling households to keep supplies of non-perishable food and bottled water sufficient to cope with three days of disruption. Which is kind of what people do anyway when they go to the shop.
The campaign has been developed with more than 500 organisations, including emergency services, charities, businesses and local authorities.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis said households taking simple precautions would reduce pressure on emergency responders, allowing them to prioritise people requiring additional assistance.
“Those who can follow this advice should follow this advice,” he said.
Seems a bit much to tell the entire country to become a prepper over some storms, Dan!
But British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting had more details, and it looks like war is on the menu.
Writing in the Telegraph over the weekend, Streeting warned that the UK’s enemies could be ready to launch an attack on the UK by 2030.
“Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new,” he wrote. “What has changed is their capacity. By 2030, their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack.”
They don’t issue such things lightly. I wonder what they’re up to or preparing for.
